Door Schedule Wind Requirements

Every door type has unique wind load requirements. Click each card to explore what makes entry doors, garage doors, and sliders different.

Entry Door Requirements

Entry doors must withstand both positive pressure (wind pushing in) and negative pressure (suction trying to blow the door open). In Monroe County, entry doors typically need +55/-67 PSF ratings and impact resistance.

Positive:
+55 PSF
Negative:
-67 PSF

Understanding Door Wind Loads

Doors are more than just openings - they're critical components of your building envelope. When a door fails during a hurricane, wind enters the building and the internal pressure can blow off the roof from the inside. This is why door specifications are just as important as windows.

Entry Doors

The main entry is often in Zone 5 (wall corner area), requiring the highest pressure ratings. Impact-rated entry doors with multi-point locking systems resist both wind pressure and flying debris.

Garage Doors

The weakest link in most homes. A 16-foot garage door has 112 square feet of area - at 58 PSF, that's over 6,400 pounds of force! Wind-rated garage doors use horizontal bracing and heavy-duty tracks.

Sliding Glass Doors

Large glass area means higher total load. Impact-rated sliders use laminated glass that holds together when broken. The track and rollers must also be rated for the wind load.

In Monroe County, all exterior doors must either be impact-rated OR protected by approved hurricane shutters. Most homeowners choose impact-rated products for convenience - no scrambling to install shutters when a storm approaches.
