Bigger glass has more surface area for wind to push on, but the same edges to hold it. Think of a big trampoline vs a small one - the big one sags more in the middle. Larger glass lites deflect more under pressure, so they need extra thickness to stay within safe limits.

For HVHZ residential with standard 1/4 inch laminated glass, maximum is typically around 24 x 36 inches at 60 PSF design pressure. Larger windows up to 48 x 72 inches require 3/8 inch or thicker laminated glass. Very large openings may need 1/2 inch or insulated glass units.

Use ASTM E1300 charts or software. Enter the glass width, height, design pressure, and support conditions. The chart gives minimum glass thickness for a 8 per 1000 probability of breakage. For laminated glass, use the combined thickness of the glass plies only, not the interlayer.
